Wildlife Impact and The University of Queensland Great Ape Conservation Research Partnership

Wildlife Impact and The University of Queensland will collaborate to advance great ape conservation by examining understudied social and ecological dimensions of human–orangutan coexistence. The partnership will develop evaluation frameworks and monitoring protocols, analyse conflict, coexistence and policy data, assess community-based initiatives, and produce reports and publications to strengthen conservation theory and practice.

About this project

The research will examine understudied dimensions of human-orangutan coexistence, Research findings will contribute to theoretical and practical understanding of orangutan conservation, with comprehensive documentation to ensure knowledge transferability across conservation settings.  

Our approach

Proposed activities incorporate a suite of desktop research activities, including:

  • Development of novel evaluation frameworks for orangutan conservation interventions incorporating both social and ecological outcomes
  • Development of reproducible monitoring indicators and protocols
  • Evaluating community-based conservation initiatives, including assessing community engagement methodologies in conservation contexts, evaluating participation models and their impacts on conservation success.
  • Analysis of data about human-orangutan conflict patterns and resolution mechanisms, to identify opportunities for policy and practice change
  • Analysis of data examining coexistence strategies in modified landscapes
  • Synthesising survey data about local ecological knowledge systems
  • Examination of policy effectiveness on orangutan protection
  • Preparation of reports and publications

Key outcomes aimed for include:
  • Wildlife Impact Final Report outlining project summary and research outcomes
  • Publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
